The University of Lagos has revealed that no fewer than 281 graduands will bag first-class certificates during the institution’s 51st convocation ceremonies scheduled to hold between July 5 and 8. The university’s vice-chancellor, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, during a press briefing, said the first-class graduands are among more than 15,000 other candidates billed to receive their certificates and diplomas during the ceremonies.
Mr Ogundipe disclosed that Alimi Adedeji, from the Faculty of Science, emerged as the best graduand, with a cumulative gradient point average (CGPA) of 4.98 out of the possible 5 points, while Opeyemi Popoola, was named as the best graduating student with a CGPA of 4.90 from the department of economics.
A 71-year-old PhD student (Ph.D. French), from the Department of European Languages and International Studies, Felicia Marinze, emerged as one of the best graduating students from the institution’s School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS). She was also crowned as the oldest student to be awarded a Ph.D. degree in the history of the university.
The vice-chancellor added that Olatunji Moruf from the Department of Marine Science and Ekundayo Mesagan of the Department of Economics would also be awarded the best Ph.D. thesis in Humanities, alongside Mrs. Marinze.
This year’s convocation has 7,754 students who will be awarded first degrees and 7,999 Postgraduate degrees.
