Meet the 8-year-old boy, Garret Brown of Lakeview Elementary School in Norman, Oklahoma, United States, who has just won a hero award after saving the life of his classmate who choked on food.

Jordan Nguyen who is a music teacher at the school narrated the incident to Good Morning America stating that it was a chicken nugget day and the kids loved the meal but a third grader who was busy enjoying the meal with his friends took a bite of the chicken and started choking. She added that “He couldn’t breathe.” His friends seeing this called for help.

She further said that “I was on the other side of the cafeteria and when I heard the scream, I had to rush to where the students were and then Garret took courage and instead of just shouting, decided to help.” He started performing the Heimlich maneuver on his classmate.

She further explained that “Instead of shouting, he jumped to the other side of the table and went behind Cashton and did a couple thrusts of Heimlich maneuver and it only took about two thrusts and he was able to dislodge the food. By the time I reached Cashton, the food had already dislodged and he was breathing again.”
