Meet this exceptional young lady Jessikah Inaba who has just become the first black blind barrister in the UK. She is just 23-year-old and just last week qualified after studying for five years at University in London.
She completed all her courses using Braille and also credits her friends and also her tutors for helping her. Braille can be read on a special screen that typically gives one line at a time or from specially printed books.
Jessikah is completely blind and throughout her time at the University of Law-London Bloomsbury, she had to use Braille. She began her accelerated law degree in September 2017 before proceeding for master’s degree two years later along with a professional training course.
She said that it took seven months for her university to get one of her two key study texts to enable her read on her computer and five months for the other.
She said that she got through most of her studies by making her own Braille materials from lecture notes or from friends reading books to her.
In her words she said “I still can’t really believe I’ve done it. One day, I’ll wake up and realize how amazing this is. It was hard and I often though of giving up, but my supportive family gave me courage and strength.
“I always believed in myself from the start that there is nothing about me which means this isn’t possible. I know I can do this job really well and the more people like me who go through training, the easier it will become.”
She said that she believes she’s giving hope to others in the same situation as her and for her to push through despite her condition; she is easing the burden on the next person like her.
Jessikah is blind as a result of an eye condition called bilateral microphthalmia, where babies are born with smaller than usual eyes. She is now planning to apply for a pupillage- where newly qualified barristers get their first placement in chambers-when applications open in January.
Congratulations to Jessikah on her achievement!!
