About Canada Postdoctoral Research Program

The next phase of doctoral studies prepares you with the tools you need to excel in research careers across all fields at all levels – ranging from academia, government agencies, and non-profit organizations right up to industry and business.

Postdoctoral research is an integral part of a doctoral student’s program. It should be recognized as part of the professionalization process and be integrated into the overall research training program. Postdoctoral research should also contribute to one’s doctoral program through critical research assessment, academic publications, and institutional teaching responsibilities if possible.

  • Ph.D. (University)

This is a 10-12 month full-time residential post-doctoral program. The Ph.D. may lead to the award of an advanced degree such as a Master of Science or Master of Arts by thesis (MSc/MA) within 4 years or by other means such as completion of a Dissertation and then registering for this degree at another University (i.e.:).

  • Ph.D. (Community College, University, or Other Institution)

This is an 8-9 month full-time residential post-doctoral program. It may lead to the award of an advanced degree such as a Master of Science or Master of Arts by thesis (MSc/MA) within 4 years or by other means such as completion of a Dissertation and then registering for this degree at another University (i.e.:).

  • Ph.D. (Online Program)

This is an eight-month full-time residential post-doctoral program. The Ph.D. candidate works on a full-time basis, but the program is completed online. This type of Ph.D. is usually taken in conjunction with other degrees (i.e., bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate) and/or work experience.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), an agency of the Government of Canada dedicated to conducting health research that advances knowledge about Canadians’ health and wellbeing, announced in December 2017 its intent to award two new awards: a New Investigator Doctoral Award (NID) and a New Investigator Track 1 Grant (NI1T1).

The Purpose of the Canada Postdoctoral Research Program

The Government of Canada Postdoctoral Research Program (CRDF) offers highly competitive research experience in Canadian universities and private and public sector laboratories. The objective of CRDF is to attract the best talent from around the world to collaborate with Canadian researchers across disciplines. Up to 60 scholarships are awarded each year, including an annual quota for qualified foreign applicants.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree or equivalent terminal degree in their field and not have exceeded five years since the date they obtained their doctoral degree or its equivalent terminal degree at the time that they apply for a CRDF scholarship.

  • Applicants must have received their Ph.D. before January 1 of the year they are applying. Applicants will be required to complete a 2-year post-doctoral fellowship or equivalent at a Canadian university, private, or public research institution.
  • A CRDF fellowship may also be extended beyond the initial 2-year period if necessary to complete a research project for which a Ph.D. degree at the time of application would not have been sufficient.
  • Selected applicants are required to undergo an in-depth background review by a LOR that includes personal interviews, reference checks, and document reviews across all fields relevant to their proposed research interests.

The review is conducted by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development’s Postdoctoral Research Program Selection Committee (PRSSC).

Benefits of the Canada Postdoctoral Research Program

The reason for selecting a career in the sciences is the plethora of opportunities that exist to work with amazing research institutes and organizations. It’s easy to think that these doors open when you have your Ph.D., but they begin long before this milestone can be achieved.

  • The Government of Canada has established a program specifically designed for postdoctoral fellows to help them transition into careers outside of academia, or provide additional training for academics who want to pursue successful careers outside their field.
  • They also assist in the transition of those who are returning to academia or are looking to change their research focus.
  • The Program is designed to offer you funding for a maximum period of three years, which gives you flexibility with your career choices. You can use this time to develop an idea into a product or project that has commercial potential with an industry partner or continue in your research career for as long as you like.
  • The key is to ensure that the research project aligns with the Government of Canada’s overall strategic priorities and mandates such as economic growth, well-being, and sustainability.
  • Graduates are exposed to a world-class academic community, and research projects are offered by those members of the academic community who have demonstrated their ability in the field.
  • As the world’s first employer of scientific researchers, by helping you to transition into a successful career in the private sector or with a government organization, this program is unique.
  • And as a graduate of this program, you’re also eligible for other programs that may be available through the Government of Canada.
