Ebonyi State Governor Proscribes ASUU, NASU, Others in State Varsity; Approves N500m for Staff Salaries

Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi has proscribed the existence of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff of Union of Universities (NASU) and others in Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki.

According to him, the decision was taken to ensure the immediate commencement of academic and non-academic activities in the state-owned university, so that it does not negatively affect resumption. He, however, allowed the existence of the Students Union Government (SUG) to run in the school.

In a statement by Dr Onyebuchi Chima, Commissioner for Education, Ebonyi State, the Governor has approved the release of N500 million for the payment of staff salaries, disclosing that all teaching and non-teaching staff will be paid 80 per cent of their monthly outstanding salaries except those who refused to resume as directed.

The Governor further approved single-digit 300 million naira loan for the commencement of SME business to boost EBSU’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and donated the Ebonyi state mushroom and citrus farm to the institution as part of efforts to boost the IGR of Ebonyi State University.

The statement noted that five million naira has also been approved for the cleaning of the school environment, while a staggered school fees payment will be implemented to ease parents and students of the burden of fees payment.

Furthermore, the Governor resolved to hold regular meetings with staff (teaching/ non-teaching) and students of the institution and admonished them to be law-abiding and vigilant so as to prevent criminal activities.
