List of Courses Offered in UNILAG (University of Lagos)

The University of Lagos located in Akoka, Lagos State, is an internally recognized Federal Tertiary Institution and there are a variety of courses offered in UNILAG for aspiring students. The University is among the great citadel of learning in Nigeria, There are many courses in UNILAG, which we are going to discuss in this article, for hostel and school fees schedule, check out this article here.

Founded in 1962, University of Lagos is one of the five generation university in Nigeria and Africa. The university presently has three campuses in the mainland of Lagos. However, two of it’s campuses are located in Yaba; the main campus is in Akoka, The second campus is in Id-Araba, surulere (College of Medicine).

The school is equipped with enough basic amenities which aid the easy navigation of learning in the laboratory, class room and the school at large. Having won so many awards, Unilag has produced so many scholars home and abroad.

The main campus located in Akoka has 802 acres of land and it’s mainly surrounded by a Lagos Lagoon. In Terms of Admission, Unilag is one of the most competitive school in Nigeria.

Unilag is recognized by the National Universities Commission, (NUC) to run the various B.Sc programs that will be listed in a short while, keep reading.

The University’s Admission is based on Merit. The school conducts an entrance exam after Jamb Utme is concluded for candidates who choses Unilag as their first choice and had come out in Jamb UTME with an aggregate score of 200. The examination is called POST-UME, which means, Post Unified Matriculation Examination.

THINGS ABOUT UNILAG POSTUME

Unilag Postutme is an examination conducted by the school yearly. It is conducted after they finished selling the application form. Unlike Jamb Utme, the PostUme examination is based on three (3) compulsory subjects irrespective of the course applied.

The three compulsory courses offered in UNILAG are,

  1. Use of English
  2. Mathematics
  3. Current Affairs

The PostUme examination questions are set mixing the questions together. For instance, if your number 1 question is from mathematics, the next question might come from Use of English or Current Affairs.

The maximum period for the exam is 30 minutes. Once it’s up to 30 minutes, the system will submit automatically and log out the candidate.

Some candidates keep wondering if the school allows the use of calculator inside the examination hall. Well, yes, Unilag allows the use of Calculator.

The exams is based on intelligence and smartness, not really calculator. Because the kind of that usually come out in the Postume are some Further mathematics questions that requires thinking and analysis and not necessarily calculator.

Therefore, one who is good in further mathematics and knows how to derive answers in it, has a higher chances of getting high mark.

The rest of the questions can come from the Use of English or current affairs. However, candidates comes out saying that they only saw one mathematics question in their exam, and more of English or current affairs, while some sees more of Mathematics questions than the rest of the subjects.

Whatever may be the case, one aught to be fully prepared for the examinations while waiting for the date for it to be written. To avoid I don’t really like mathematics, or I don’t really know much about Current Affairs, candidates are advise to prepare ahead of time or even attend some summer coaching. If I should be asked what time is the best to start preparing for the PostUme?, my answer would be, immediately after writing JAMB UTME.

Some candidates waits for the date of the PostUme to be announced before they can start reading and that is a bad idea. The examination humbles anyone who thinks reading a day or week before the examination is the ultimate.

Nevertheless, Few candidates comes out extremely successful, some comes out with an average score, while many comes out with failure. The examination is marked over 30. Few usually score 30/30 while some scores 0/30, very bitter.

Whatever may be the case, anyone who really and sincerely prepares for the postume will surely pass.

University of Lagos offered many courses which are accredited by National University Commission, (NUC). The courses are under their various Faculties. The faculties is headed by the Deans.

THE PROTOCOLS TO BE OBSERVED BEFORE YOU GAIN ADMISSION IN UNILAG

  1. Make up your mind and be ready for the competition
  2. Sketch a reading schedule
  3. Study very hard (read in between lines)
  4. Avoid distraction during the period of exam preparation
  5. Connect with fellow aspirants (serious ones)
  6. Create a reading group on whatsapp
  7. Solve some past questions to be able to know how the exam is been conducted
  8. Learn how to manage time (very necessary)

All the courses listed above are all accredited by National University Commission (NUC). The course has their various cut off mark. The cut off mark is based on the candidate’s Jamb and Post UTME score.

HOW MANY YEARS DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE A DEGREE PROGRAM IN UNILAG

It takes a minimum of four years to complete a program though it depends on your course of study. For some department like Medicine and surgery, it takes a mininun of 6 years and for Law it takes a minimun of 5 years to complete.

Unilag has changed their Engineering which formerly lasts for a minimun of 4 years now to a 5 years course of study.

One who graduates from Unilag with a very good result stands a chance to get a good job in Nigeria despite the spike in the rate of unemployment.
