Private Universities In Lagos – Lagos State is one of the biggest states in Nigeria, in fact, it is the most populous and most diverse city in Nigeria. Lagos State is one of the Yoruba cities in Nigeria and it is one of the most productive states in Nigeria as it maintains high trade and commerce rate in the country among the thirty-six states present in Nigeria.

The state is one of the financially supportive states in Nigeria and West Africa at large and it  houses an international airport and a seaport which some other states do not have.

Lagos, also referred to as Ilu Eko in the Yoruba language and Lasgidi in the streets, was the state capital of Lagos State, however, the state capital was moved to Ikeja,  another large city in Lagos State.

The name ‘Lagos’ was given to the state by the Portuguese,  a Portuguese explorer. Lagos simply meant Lake in Portuguese. Lagos State is another state in Nigeria that values and cherishes education.

The state attached a lot of value to education hence ensuring the springing up of institutions that would positively have an impact on students right from tertiary institutions like College of education, polytechnics, universities; both private and public as a whole, down to the pre-primary institutions like the kindergarten, nursery, amongst others.

In this article, we are going to discuss the private universities that are located in Lagos. In total, there are five private universities in Nigeria.

1.Anchor University, Ayobo-Ipaja

Owned by the popular Christian fellowship; Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Anchor University is a private university that is located in Ayobo, Ipaja, Lagos State.

It was founded by the General Overseer of the Church, Williams Kumuyi in the year 2014, in September. Despite its setbacks, the university has still emerged as one of the best universities in Nigeria.

A brief tour of Anchor University’s history, the institution was slated to be created exactly two years back from its final creation day, September 2012.

However, a tragic incident occurred.

The NUC representatives who were supposed to inspect and approve the project all died in a plane crash; the DANA plane crash that took place on the 3rd of March, 2012 which happened to be a Sunday.

However, the institution finally began construction in 2013, was set in 2014, and 2016, was approved by the NUC

Currently, there are three faculties in the school and they have all been approved by the NUC. The there faculties are:

  • Faculty Of Natural & Applied Sciences
  • Faculty Of Social & Management Sciences
  • Faculty Of Humanities

2.Augustine University, Ilara

Also known as AUI, Augustine University, Ilara is another private institution in Lagos, Nigeria that is slowly making its way up the ladder.

The Catholic-owned institution is located in a small town in Epe, a local government area, Lagos known as Ilara. The university was established in 2008 but was accredited by the NUC on the 25th of February, 2015( seven years after creation).

The university is available for undergraduate students as well as postgraduate students as they offer educational training at both levels. Recently, the NUC approved seven new courses in addition to the courses initially offered.

The new courses approved are B.Sc. Information Technology, B.Sc. Cybersecurity, B.Sc. Political Science B.Sc.  Fisheries & Aquaculture, B.Sc. Mass Communication, B.Sc.  Biotechnology, and B.Sc. Software Engineering.

3.Caleb University, Imota

Caleb University, Imota is a private institution in Lagos that was founded by Prince Oladega Adebogun on the 7th of January, 2008 in Imota, Lagos State, Nigeria.

It’s no longer news that the diminishing educational and moral value in the public schools; primary, secondary, and tertiary is causing a damage to the academic lives of students.  It took its toll on our supposed ‘future of tomorrow’, causing damage to their academic health.

Parents began to yearn for a good school that could help rebuild their children and also inculcate Christian and moral values into the children. Prince Oladega Adebogun decided to be the ‘Messiah’ to them and set up a primary school; Caleb Nursery and Primary school and yes,  Caleb university started off as a primary school.

Caleb Nursery and primary school seemed to solve a part of the problem as it suited the purpose of parents but again another challenge arose. There was a need for a secondary school to permanently seal in the values children had taken from the primary school and in 1995 and this birthed Caleb International College in Magodo, Lagos.State.

Cutting to the chase, a tertiary institution was created to supplement the schools that had been created and on the 7th of January, the institution began academic activities with its first set of admitted students which were 141 in number.

4.Pan Atlantic University, Lekki

Situated in one of the most expensive places to reside in Lagos, Pan Atlantic University is a private institution that was established in 2002. The institution was associated with a business school and in 2014, on the 27th of November, the university began to offer admission to undergraduate programs as the institution was initially meant for postgraduate students.

5.Eko University of Medical and Health Sciences, Ijakin

Eko University of Medical and Health Sciences is a private institution that was founded in 2017. Eko University of Medical and Health Sciences also referred to as EKO UNIV MED is rated as the 149th best university in Nigeria out of the over 180 universities in Nigeria.

Despite being a new school, Eko University of Medical and Health Science has always tried to provide the best education for its students by providing academic and non academic educational training and enhancement facilities such as a supportive and fully functioning administration and a library too, a functional one at that.

Eko University of Medical and Health Sciences is located in Ijakin, Lagos State, Nigeria, and offers undergraduate degrees (Bachelor’s Degree) and postgraduate degrees (Masters and Doctoral degrees).

The institution has three faculties and they are:

i.Faculty of Science

Courses offered include but are not limited to Physics, Computer Studies, Mathematics, and Chemistry amongst others.

Ii. Faculty of Clinical Sciences

Courses offered are but are not limited to Radiology, Medicine, and Clinic pathology amongst others.

Iii. Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences

Courses offered include but are not limited to Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry.

James Hope University, Lagos, Lagos State

This is a postgraduate university located in Lekki Peninsula – a flourishing cosmopolis of Lagos, Nigeria whose aim is to to educate and inspire men and women to excel in every aspect of life, and to exert lasting positive impacts on the world.

These are the five private universities that are present in Lagos although there are claims that there are about 6 to 8 private universities in Lagos.

The universities mentioned in this article are the universities that are within Lagos itself and not on the expressway between Lagos and another state.
