Lagos state is another beautiful state in the giant of Africa; Nigeria, West Africa. The state is popularly known for its dense overpopulation in which there is almost no space for anyone or anything else.

This is a result of the fact that Lagos State has a lot to offer in terms of job opportunities, business opportunities as well as entertainment. The state is one of the states in Nigeria that has a high GDP hence contributing to the growth of the economy of Nigeria.

Due to the high population, the state is always fun-filled and entertaining although it can be quite stressful.

Compared to other states, Lagos has the highest level of suicide cases in Nigeria because of the super stressful activities and frustrating cities. The traffic congestion road plyers face regularly coupled with the high level of crime rate and insecurity has driven many into a state of depression.

However, the state is also full of entertainment and enjoyment to make up for the stressful life after all, everything that has an advantage also has an advantage.

Away from the digression, the central point of this post is the universities that are present in Lagos. As busy as Lagos may be, it is not too busy for education as it has about 11 universities all to itself. Out of the 11 universities, 2 belong to the federal government, 3 belong to the state government and 6 are privately owned.

1. Augustine University

Augustine University, Ilara, popularly known by its acronym, AUI, is a private university in Ilara, Lagos State that is affiliated to a Catholic Church; Lagos Catholic Archdiocese in the year 2008.

On the 25th of February, 2005, the university was accredited by the National University Commission(NUC) and recognized by the Federal Government.

2. Anchor University, Ayobo, Lagos

Anchor University is a private university that is located in Iyabo, Ipaja, Lagos. The university is owned by Williams Kumuyi and affiliated with the Deeper Christian Life Ministry because Williams Kumuyi is the founder of Deeper Christian Life Ministries.

Anchor University was established in 2014. The institution was initially planned to be set up in September 2012 but was forcefully aborted as the National University Commission Representatives (NUC representatives) who were to inspect and approve the project, died in a terrible plane crash and as a result, the project was forcefully placed on hold by the terrible circumstance.

However, the project rose back on its feet as construction began in 2013 which later led to the development of the institution in September 2014, two years from the proposed date, and became NUC approved and Government certified on November 2, 2016, two years after creation.

The institution currently has three faculties viz: Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, and Faculty of Science and Science Education

3. Caleb University, Lagos

Caleb University is a private university that is located in Imota, Lagos State. The institution was built to complement the remaining institutions built by Prince Oladega Adebogun on the 7th of January, 2018.

Dating back to 1986, just as present, due to the challenges students face at the government-owned institutions, Prince Oladega Adebogun decided to start up a primary school which he named Caleb Nursery and Primary School.

The primary institution seemed to alleviate the problem education posed to the country, however, this development was only restricted to the primary and pre-primary institutions, and the problem was partially solved.

Again, there was still a need for secondary institutions which would constitute another part of the solution that was needed.

Prince Oladega Adebogun went on to establish a secondary school and in 2018, his university, Caleb University was founded.

4. Eko University of Medical and Health Sciences Ijanikin, Lagos

Eko University of Medical and Health Sciences, Ijanikin, Lagos is a private medical coeducational institution that is located in Lagos.

Courses offered at the university include Nursing Science, Medicine, and Surgery as well as other medical-related courses.

The institution also offers some other courses like Information and Communication Technology amongst others. Currently, several prestigious universities both at home and abroad are preparing to be affiliated with the university. The university was founded by  Chief (Dr.) Hammed Ayodele Ibraheem, MD.

5.James Hope University, Lagos

James Hope University is a private institution that is located in Lekki Peninsula. Lekki Peninsula is the location of most of the rich and influential people in Lagos.

James Hope University only offers admission to postgraduate students as it is focused on building competent students who are ready to take the world by a storm.

The institution is owned and founded by Jim Ovia, CON.

6. Pan Atlantic University

Pan Atlantic University is a private institution that is established and founded in Lekki, Lagos in 2002. The institution was proposed to be for postgraduate students but in November 2014, the institution began to offer admission to undergraduate students.

7. Lagos State University, Ojo

Lagos State University, Ojo popularly known as LASU, Ojo is a state-owned school that is located in Lagos. It was established in 1983 under the governance of Late Lateef Kayode Jakande for the expansion of tertiary education in the state.

The university has always been rated as one of the best universities in Nigeria.

8. Lagos State University of Education (LASUED)

Lagos State University of Education is a new institution that was established just two months ago. The institution was established in February 2022.

The institution provides accommodation for its students and it is open to all and sundry irrespective of where you are from.

9. Lagos State University of Science and Technology

Lagos State University of Science and Technology(LASUSTECH) is another public university located in Lagos that was established in 1977. It was formerly known as Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH).

10. National Open University of Nigeria, Lagos

National Open University of Nigeria(NOUN) as the name implies, is an open university for students in Nigeria. The university is open to all and sundry and is located in almost all the states in Nigeria if not all. NOUN has three centers in Nigeria. Their location are as follows:

  1. Lagos Study Centre, Noun Study Centre, NERDC, Agidingbi, beside Fela Shrine, Ikeja
  1. McCarthy Study Centre, NOUN Study Centre, No. 38/40 McCarthy, Off Obalende Road, Opp. Ghana High Commission, Victoria Island, Lagos, and lastly,
  1. NOUN Special Study Centre, Nigerian Navy, NOUN study Centre, Nigerian Navy NNS QUORRA, Apapa, Lagos.

11. University of Lagos (UNILAG)

The University of Lagos is another institution in Lagos that is known for its renowned style and method of teaching. It was founded in 1962 and is one of the indigenous institutions present in Nigeria.
