It is almost impossible to be able to gain admission into any tertiary institution in Nigeria without JAMB UTME. In fact, it is impossible to gain admission into any federal or state university without JAMB UTME.
JAMB UTME; Joint Admission Matriculation Board Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination is a compulsory examination for all students seeking to further their education into tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The examination is usually at a score of 400.

Now, taking this examination alone is not enough. Just like any examination, it is compulsory you pass this examination if you are seeking to further your studies in Nigeria.
As earlier stated, passing this examination is much more important than taking it. According to students, The JAMB UTME can be quite difficult, hence just like every examination, there is always a pass mark to be qualified as a successful candidate.
Every year, a cut off mark is released for all tertiary institutions; polytechnics, colleges of education and universities in Nigeria which must compulsorily be followed. However, each tertiary institution can decide to increase its own cut off mark but the mark must not be too high or impossible to meet.
Despite the releasing of the unified cut off mark, some students still face challenges in getting admission to tertiary institutions, most especially universities because most of them have raised their standard quite high that not all students can fit in.
Jamb Cut Off Mark
Sequel to the discussion above, JAMB releases a particular score that would be used as the pass mark. The mark varies for the polytechnics, universities and colleges. Now, bear in mind that this mark is not a permanent score as it changes each year.
To enable students to prepare well, there is usually a mock examination that is conducted a few weeks prior to the examination. It is however, not compulsory for students to take it but it is advisable as it helps to prepare them for the examination that lies ahead and it is with no doubt that any student who makes an excellent performance in the JAMB mock examination is more than capable to pass the original JAMB examination.
Students are usually enjoined to prepare hard for the JAMB examination because:
- The JAMB UTME will be very different from the mock examination, in fact, there would be no similarities so as to prevent students who took the mock from knowing the exact question
- Having a high score is important for you to be able to choose the institution of your choice.
- You do not have to be scared of ever getting admitted to any institution.
In this article, we will be discussing the universities in Nigeria that accept students with 120 as their JAMB UTME score although you might not get the exact course you want to study because asides Jamb cut off mark and school cut off mark, there is also departmental cut off mark.
Before we move on, it is best we explain some terms.
Institution Cut Off Mark
Again, after JAMB has declared the cut off mark for institutions, every institution can then go ahead to set its own cut off mark for the admission of students. A suitable explanation for this is that the high number of students seeking admission every year is much more than the institution can handle, especially institutions like University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University amongst others.
After all, everyone wants to graduate from a prestigious university.
The best way chosen by these institutions to select a few of these students is to give its own cut off mark for admission into the university to enable them select the best of the best, so you see, getting a good grade is very necessary.
Some institutions raise their cut off mark to even 200 to be able to study any course in the institution.
Meeting the institution’s cut off mark is still not a full assurance of achieving your dreams as there are still one or two more bridges to cross.
Departmental Cut Off Mark
This is the last hurdle to be crossed. As earlier stated, meeting up with the school cut off mark is not enough if you really want to study the course of your choice.
Aside the institution’s cut off mark, the departmental cut off mark also exists. It helps to determine if you would be able to handle the course. Again, this is another reason to perform excellently in the JAMB examination.
Post UTME
This is the last hurdle to cross. Most of the institutions conduct a post UTME examination for students so as to further filter out the amount of students they can take. Students who pass the post UTME examination can then go on with their admission.
It is of utmost importance that you know that just passing or having the exact cut off mark might not qualify you as admission at federal or state institutions are very competitive hence those who have the highest score would likely be picked first before others are considered.
Well, for students who met the cut off mark for a tertiary institution which is 120, this article is here to help you get rid of the need and stress of searching for universities that can admit you.
