149-year-old jinx broken by a Nigerian lady who happens to be a mother of three after she became the first black woman to secure a PhD in Pure Mathematics at the University of South Africa (UNISA).
The woman identified as professor Oghenetega Ighedo said that her journey into the world of mathematics was inspired by her mother, who was a retired maths teacher.
Prof obtain her Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Industrial Mathematics from Delta State University, Nigeria AND Master of Science (MSc) in Pure Mathematics from the University of Ibadan.
According to a post by Women Power Africa, we gather that Prof Ighedo said she was motivated by two things;
She said ““My decision to study pure mathematics was also motivated by the fact that not only are there few black pure mathematicians but there are fewer black women who are pure mathematicians,”
Sh also said “In spite of being a mother and a wife, I was able to complete my PhD within three years,”
Currently, Oghenetega Ighedo is an Associate Professor at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of South Africa.
