The Nigerian government claims that the service in recent times has redeemed its image from a corruption riddled government agency to a new association that has gutted itself of loose practices pointing to the fact that since the time (2017) its profit donation to the country continues to rise above one trillion Naira annually.

Despite the claims of the government that the character of the service has bettered from a loose government agency to an agency that has imbibed the spirit of selflessness to the country over tone enrichment of its officers, several exemplifications of expansive bribery and corruption allegations still live.

One illustration cited by the government of an prevalence that demonstrated a new customs service was the rejection of the sum of fix by an functionary of the service Bashir Abubakar, being the plutocrat offered to him in order to grease the release of holders of dangerous medicines at Apapa Port in Lagos

The Nigeria Customs service is known to have a character that has been marred by multitudinous corruption and fraud dishonors across the times. And according to Translucency International’s (2010) Global Corruption Mark, further than half of original homes surveyed attested to paying backhanders to NCS officers in the year (2009).

To date, compromised staff, complex regulations and bureaucracy girding the import and import of goods has nurtured a terrain in which backhanders are generally paid. And several companies are also believed to underestimate their goods upon importation to avoid penalties. But yet other companies, operating in informal frugality, resort to smuggling as a means of avoiding legal trade.

In Particular, a number of foreign companies have been involved in fraud and corruption dishonors in recent times . The three accessories of (Vetco International, Vetco Gray Controls Inc, Vetco Gray controls Ltd and Vetco Gray UK Ltd) contended shamefaced to violating anti-bribery vittles of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act -FCPA when they admitted to making US (2.1 million) worth of loose payments over a two- time period to officers in the (NCS) through Panalpina, a Swiss grounded fees forwarding establishment in Nigeria.

At the same time as the accessories were charged, another (Vetco attachment – Aibel International Ltd) entered into a remitted execution agreement with the US Department of Justice for its involvement in the same reproach. And this remitted execution agreement included co-operation with the Department of Justice, stricter controls and the retention of FCPA observers.

But latterly, still, the company admitted to failing to misbehave with its scores and paid a financial forfeiture. The oil services firm Transocean Ltd made loose payments to the value of US90, to Nigerian customs officers between (2002) and (2007) to extend its importation status and admit false paperwork.

TidewaterInc., an oil service establishment, paid US (1.6 million) through Panalpina to Nigerian customs officers to clear vessels into Nigerian waters.

Noble Energy authorized payments by its original attachment to gain eight temporary permits. And in November (2011), Noble, Transocean and Tidewater were three of the companies that settled allegations of involvement in a US (100 million) bribery scheme in Nigeria, as part of the Panalpina agreements.
