Scholarships at Rice University

Full-tuition scholarships will cover all expenses for tuition, room, and board, required books and supplies, and travel to campus. These scholarships are awarded to all admitted freshmen who are accepted as full-time students by the Rice University Admissions Office. Students must be in good standing with the University to receive the scholarship.

  • Merit Scholarships

Each year, Rice offers a limited number of merit-based awards for incoming freshmen who have been admitted as full-time students. These awards range from $2,000 to $18,000 over four years and do not automatically renew. Additionally, these one-time awards are not renewable or transferable between academic years or institutions. These offers will not be extended to students who have already been offered a scholarship; however, they can apply again for the following year’s merit-based award.

  • Academic Scholarships

Students may also receive an academic scholarship based on their class rank in the upper half of their high school graduating class. All students admitted and enrolled as full-time students will be considered for these awards.

  • Rice University Drake Undergraduate Research Awards for High School Seniors

With the introduction of this offering, Rice is expanding its scholarship program to benefit high school seniors who plan to pursue further education at Rice or elsewhere. The awards are designated for students who will enroll as Rice undergraduates.

The requirement is a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and these awards cover tuition, fees, room, and board for four years of undergraduate study. Incoming freshmen do not apply for these awards; Rice automatically considers all valedictorians and salutatorians from Houston-area high schools based on their class rank in the upper half of the graduating class.

For students outside the Houston area, Rice uses a formula to determine eligibility based on class rank in their high school class.

Who can apply for Rice University scholarships?

These scholarships recognize students who demonstrate outstanding scholarship and leadership potential in secondary school and who are excellent candidates for success at Rice University. These awards typically cover all expenses for four years of undergraduate study.

For selected students and by prior application, Rice may also provide a four-year full academic scholarship based on selection by the student’s high school guidance counselor to join the freshman class. The student must have completed at least three years of high school and have a minimum 2.5 GPA.

The recipient will rely on financial aid from Rice for the first year, with a combination of outside scholarships and merit scholarships from subsequent years based on his/her continuing academic excellence at Rice University. These awards are limited to 20 students per year and are renewable for up to three additional years if the individual continues to qualify for these awards.
