Scholarships For Nigerian Undergraduate Students


The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination is just a few days away and while most of you are focused on performing excellently to secure admission into the institution of your choice, you might also want to consider some scholarship opportunities offered by some organizations in Nigeria.


From multi national companies to oil and gas companies, non-profit organizations, philanthropists, government and not to mention but a few, there are a lot of organizations offering scholarships to students in Nigeria. These scholarships are mostly offered to financially support undergraduates who are economically at disadvantage.

Scholarships For Nigerian Undergraduate Students


Some of these scholarship opportunities you can take advantage of include:


AGBAMI SCHOLARSHIP


The Agbami Scholarship, sponsored by a Chevron company, Star Deep Water Petroleum Limited, is an undergraduate scholarship for students studying any of the following: Medicine/Surgery, Pharmacy, Engineering and Dentistry in any Nigerian university. The scholarship covers the tuition fees of students and provides them with stipends.
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be a full-time undergraduate student in any of the higher institutions in Nigeria, you must be in your first or second year of study, you must have a CGPA of 3.5 and a minimum of 6 O-level credits in one sitting.
When applying for this scholarship, you will be asked to provide a functioning email, your personal information, your educational information and other related documents. False Information or documents will result in disqualification.
Note: Shortlisted students will have to take part in a computer-based test which result will determine if they get the scholarship or not.


MTN SCHOLARSHIP


The MTN Scholarship Scheme, a combination of the MTN Scholarship Scheme for Blind Students and the MTN Science and Technology Scholarship Scheme, is a scheme that is aimed at acknowledging and reward undergraduate students with high performances with an annual sum of N200,000 (Two hundred thousand naira) provided they maintain their good grades.
This scholarship covers undergraduate students in the following faculties: Mathematics, Industrial Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, Engineering, Architecture, Computer and Information Science, Electronic and Electronic Technology, Computer and Electronics, Information Technology, Communication Technology, Pure/Applied Physics and Physics Electronics.
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must have a minimum CGPA of 3.5 (if you are studying in a university) and a GPA of 3.0 (if you are studying in a polytechnic), you must be a full-time undergraduate in any of the higher institutions in Nigeria, you must be in your 3rd year of study and you must not be a current beneficiary of a scholarship award.


SHELL SCHOLARSHIP


The Shell Scholarship is a scholarship awarded by the Shell Petroleum Development Company. The scholarship is made up of both the Areas of Operations Merit Award which is meant for students in SPDC’s operational states and the National Merit Award which is meant for Nigerians in every state of the country. Although the Shell scholarship is awarded to both students in high school and higher institutions, this article focuses on the scholarship award given to students in higher institutions.
The aim of this scholarship is to help improve the skills of undergraduate students and promote excellence in terms of academics.
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be a citizen of Nigeria, you must be a full-time undergraduate student in any of the higher institutions in Nigeria, you must have a minimum CGPA of 2.5, you must have a minimum of 5 O-level credits which should include English and Mathematics, you must have a minimum of 200 in your UTME and you must be in your second year of study.
When applying, you will be asked to provide a functional email for easy communication, your personal information and other required documents.


EXXON-MOBIL SCHOLARSHIP

The Exxon-Mobil Scholarship is also one of the scholarship awarded by an oil and gas producing company. This scholarship is awarded by Mobil Producing Nigeria to support struggling Nigerian students in higher institutions in the following fields of study: Petroleum Engineering, Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Medicine, Agricultural Science, Geology/Geophysics and Mechanical Engineering.
To be eligible for the Exxon-Mobil Scholarship, you must be a Nigerian, you must be a student of a Nigerian higher institution, you must be in your first or second year of study, you must have a minimum of five distinction with at least six subjects in one sitting in your O-level and you must not have a running scholarship with any other oil and gas company.
You can pay for the Exxon-Mobil scholarship on Exxon-Mobil application portal. If you are eventually shortlisted, you will be asked to provide certain documents for screening before taking the scholarship exam. Some of these documents include: a proof of your admission into your school, a proof of your current year of study, a copy of your SSCE result, a proof of your state of origin, your school’s indentity card and passport photographs.
You should also know that the Exxon-Mobil Scholarship award comes with an annual sum of N75,000 which will continue till you graduate provided you maintain your CGPA of 3.5.


NNPC/SEPLAT SCHOLARSHIP


The NNPC/TOTAL Scholarship, also known as the Total Scholarship Scheme is a scholarship that is awarded to undergraduate students by TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited in a bid to chase corporate responsibility in the society. The scholarship is also aimed at promoting manpower development and excellence in terms of academics. Sponsored by the Total Upstream Companies in Nigeria and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, this scholarship award comes with a one time support of N150,000 (One hundred and fifty thousand naira).
To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to be a full-time undergraduate student of a university in Nigeria, you must be in your first or second year of study, you must have a UTME score of at least 200, you must have a minimum CGPA of 2.50 and you must not be a current beneficiary of a scholarship award from any other oil and gas company.
When applying for the NNPC/TOTAL Scholarship, you will required to provide your personal information (name, date of birth, home address, passport photographs), your contact information (functioning mobile number and email address) and your educational information (School/JAMB admission letter, JAMB statement of result, school CGPA).


LNG SCHOLARSHIP


Arguably one if the biggest scholarship award in the country today, the LNG Scholarship, sponsored by the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Limited, is a four-level scholarship program that is aimed at encouraging high output in Nigerian undergraduates and making them competitive-advantaged world class graduates.
Although the LNG Scholarship covers post primary students, undergraduate students, postgraduate students oversees and internally displaced students, this article is focused on undergraduate students alone.
To be eligible for this scholarship, you be a full-time undergraduate student of a university in Nigeria, you must be in your first year of study, you must have an excellent SSCE and JAMB result and you must not be a beneficiary another scholarship award.
When applying for the LNG Scholarship, you will be required to provide a copy of the following: your SSCE and JAMB result, your school’s admission letter and student ID, your local government identification letter and your passport photograph.
In conclusion, there are a lot of scholarship opportunities out there that are offered by multinationals, government, NGO’s, e.t.c, which you should take advantage of as an undergraduate student.
