List Of State Universities In Nigeria – Education is of great importance to the citizens of a country. Nigeria is one of the top leading countries with large numbers of schools in Africa. The benefit of good and quality education cannot be emphasized in the life of an individual.
In Nigeria, there are various types of institutions ranging from federal universities to state universities down to private universities. A state university can also be called a public university as it is for the general public; all and sundry.
State universities are usually funded by the government of that particular state, for example, Abia state university will be funded by the Abia state government although that just forms a part of their source of income for funding.

1 Abia State University
Abia state university is a government-owned university that was established in the year 1981. The university was founded in Imo State as Imo State University, Etiti as Abia state had not been created at the time.
Former governor of the Imo State, Sam Mbakwe established the institution during his tenure as governor of the state but after the creation of Abia State in 1991, the institution was moved there and was renamed.
Abia State offers degrees to students in search of undergraduate degrees, graduate as well as doctorate degrees. The university offers over 90 undergraduate and graduate programs in ten colleges viz: College of Law, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, College of Biological and Physical Sciences, College of Business Administration, College of Education, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, College of Engineering and Environmental Studies, College of Optometry as well as College of postgraduate studies.

2. Benue State University, Makurdi
Benue State University, Makurdi, Benue State was founded in the year 1992 and began to provide academic training for students in the four colleges at that time namely; College of art, college of education, college of sciences, and college of social sciences.
The institution currently has eight faculties viz; Science, social science, art, law, health science, education, and environmental sciences. The university also offers 58 graduate programs.

3. Cross River University Of Technology
Cross River University of technology, popularly known as Crustech is a state-owned university that was founded in the year 2002 in August.
The university offers about forty-five courses including but not limited to: Accounting, Agriculture, Biochemistry, Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry, Computer Science, Microbiology, Physics, e.t.c

4. Delta State University
Popularly known as DELSU, Delta state university, Abraka, Delta state is a state-owned university that came into existence in the year 1992.
The university offers varieties of programs ranging from full-time programs to part-time degrees. DELSU started with only five faculties namely the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Sciences as well as Faculty of Social Sciences.
The university is one of the twenty-five universities that are accredited by the Nigerian University Commission(NUC), a governing body for Nigerian universities. Delta state university also offers postgraduate degrees even till the doctoral level.

5. Ekiti State University
Ekiti State University is popularly regarded as EKSU. At first, in the year 1982 at inception, the university was first known as Obafemi Awolowo University before it was changed in 1985 to Ondo state university. Again, in the year 1999, it was changed to University of Ado Ekiti, and finally, in the year 2011, it changed its name to Ekiti State University, making it the only university in Nigeria to have changed its name four times.
EKSU is located in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State. Ekiti is referred to as the Fountain of knowledge and has, of course, lived up to its motto as its academic standard in all its institutions, ranging primary to tertiary, is top-notch.

6. Gombe State University
Gombe State University also known as GSU was established by Governor Muhammed Danjuma Goje in the year 2003.
The institution has not failed in producing highly competent graduates that would be academically sound and also sound in political as well as social activities of the society amongst others.
The institution currently has eight faculties viz Faculty of Art, Faculty of Education, Science, Law, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medical College, School of basic and remedial sciences as well as a school of postgraduate studies.

7. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University
Named after one of the former heads of state in Nigeria, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida university was founded in the year 2005 and began operation in the year 2006 making it seventeen years of existence.
The institution is located in Lapai, Niger state, and houses over 7000 students. It is sometimes referred to as IBB University or IBBU. IBBU currently has seven faculties namely Faculty of Naatural Sciences, Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology, Faculty of Education and Arts, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Language and Communication Studies as well as College Of Health Services.

8. Kaduna State University
Kaduna State University(KASU) is a state university that was established in the year 2004 in Kaduna, Kaduna State.
The institution has seven faculties namely Faculty of sciences, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, and Faculty of Agriculture with varieties of courses under them all. The university also has a college of medicine.

9. Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa
Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology(OAUSTECH) was formerly known as Ondo State University of Science and Technology but was renamed in 2020 in honor of the former governor of Ondo State in the year 2020.
The University was founded in the year 2008 with Olusegun Agagu, being the governor at that time. Although it was founded in 2008, OAUSTECH commenced operation in 2011 with only the Faculty of sciences but currently has two additional faculties viz Faculty of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology as well as Faculty of Engineering and Engineering Technology.

10. Lagos State University
Lagos state university is one of the few state-owned universities that has had so many achievements to its name. The University was established in 1983 in Ojo, Lagos State.
In 2020, it was rated amongst the top 600 universities in the world even though it still hasn’t reached 50 years of creation.
In September 2022, it was rated as the second-best university in Nigeria and was only the state university that made it to that list.
