Studying in the Northern Part of Nigeria

With a rise in the insecurity level in the North, it is quite normal for students to lean towards the North-Central part of the nation for tertiary Education. The need to leave their comfort zones and explore other parts of the country, learning new languages and cultures has been curbed but not totally since these parts are somewhat safe. So, if you fall into this category, here is a list of both Federal and state universities in the North-western part of the nation;

  • Benue
  • Kogi
  • Kwara
  • Nasarawa
  • Niger

Universities and jamb requirements

Federal Universities 

University of Ilorin

Requirements

To gain admission into the University of Ilorin, candidates must have or posses the following;

  • Be 16 years and above
  • Choose the school as its first choice in the Jamb Process registration
  • Be eligible and meet the faculty’s criteria
  • Five (5) credit passes in WAEC or its equivalent in no more than two sittings
  • Have a jamb score of 200 and above

Federal University of Lokoja

Requirements

For admission into the University of Lokoja, here are the following requirements;

  • Candidates must have at least Six (6) credit passes in WAEC or SSCCE in no more than one sitting
  • Candidates must score at least 180 in JAMB
  •  Candidates must ensure they choose the correct subject combination in Post UTME, depending on their choice of study
  • Subjects in SSCE must include English, Mathematics and three other areas of subject course.

For Direct Entry;

  • Candidates must have a JAMB Direct Entry Form from JAMB to apply
  • Candidates may have either of the following certificates: ICAN, HND, BSc, IJMB, ND, NCE or any other certificate.

Federal University of Technology, Minna

Requirements

To process an admission into the University of Technology Minna, here are the requirements:

  • Candidates must be 16 and above
  • Candidates must fill in the core subjects for Post UTME in relation to their course of study
  • Candidate must score at least 160 in JAMB
  • Candidates must possess a five (5) pass in WAEC or SSCE.

For Direct Entry;

  • Candidates must have passes in JUPEB or A level
  • Candidates must have a degree in related fields of study
  • Candidate must have purchased a Direct Entry form from JAMB
  • Candidates with passes in NCE or ND can also apply

National Open University (NOUN)

Requirements

For aspiring students who choose this institute as their first choice, here are the requirements:

  • Must have at least five credits, mathematics and English Language inclusive
  • Get the form and select a course of study that correlates with the candidate’s O’level or A’ level results
  • Have original WAEC or SSCE certificate ready for processing
  • Should be internet savvy or have computer experience

For Post graduate Programs

  • To qualify for admission, candidates must possess a Bachelors degree in any discipline. E.g, A candidate of Business Diploma programmes should possess qualifications like ACIA, ACII, ACIB, ACIS etc.
  • For a Masters degree Programme, candidates must possess either a Bachelors Degree with at least a second class lower in the relevant field of study.
  • For a Doctorate degree, candidates must possess a Masters Degree in a relevant field of study.

University of Abuja

Requirements

For students who wish to attain admission into the University of Abuja, here are the following requirements;

  • Candidates must possess five credit passes in WAEC/ SSCE/ GCE in no more than two sittings.
  • Candidates must choose the institute as its first choice in the JAMB processing
  • Candidate must be 16 years and above
  • Candidate must score 160 and above in their JAMB examination

For Direct Entry;

For direct entry a candidates, here are the requirements;

  • A first class or second class upper degree in related field of choice of study
  • A minimum of Merit pass in the National Certificate of Education (NCE), ND or any other certificate.

State Universities

Benue state University

Requirements

  • Candidates should have a minimum of 180 in JAMB
  • Candidates should have 6 credit passes in WAEC/SSCE/GCE
  • Candidates should be 16 and above

Kwara state University, Malete

Requirements

  • Candidates should have a minimum of five credits in WAEC/SSCE/GCE in no more than two sittings
  • The institute must be your first choice
  • Candidates must have a minimum score of 140 in the just concluded jamb examination
  • For direct entry, candidates must have acquired the direct entry form from JAMB
  • A Merit pass in NCE or ND or any other level certificates

Nasarawa state University, Keffi

Requirements

  • Candidates should have at least five credits in WAEC/ GCE in not more than two sittings
  • Candidates must choose the institutes as their first choice in JAMB application
  • Candidates should have a Merit Pass in NCE, ND, other advanced certificates
