Tohoku University Scholarships-Tohoku University is an elite institution of higher education in Japan. The university was established in 1950 and is located in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, along the coast of northeastern Japan. Tohoku University is one of the oldest Japanese National Universities, with a total number of approximately 39,000 students and approximately 600 staff members.

The university’s origins can be traced back to 1873 when the College of Engineering was founded in Tokyo. In 1949, the University was split into Tohoku University and the newly established Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Tohoku University campuses

Apart from modern facilities and infrastructure at all four campuses, Tohoku also owns one ski field (Yamagata Kogen), one golf course (near Sendai), and a shooting range with a firing range for small arms and a shotgun range.

The school flag of Tohoku University was designed by Professor Kyosuke Furuta in April 2000. The design came under criticism from some students and staff, who felt it wasn’t green or white enough. After some time, a new version of the flag was designed to display the university’s crest in better colors, as well as adding the word “University” above the word “Uni”. On May 9, 2005 (the day before the university’s 80th anniversary) a new flag was unveiled. The new design, in full colors, has been used ever since.

Tohoku University’s public campus is divided into two parts:

The main campus features various facilities and amenities like indoor sports fields, study rooms, multi-purpose halls for meetings or lectures, etc.

The main campus also has a long history of hosting football matches (along with most major Japanese universities) including the home matches for Tohoku University football teams. The pitch at the main campus can accommodate approximately 6,000 to 8,000 people and is called “Red Square”. The public area surrounding Red Square contains various facilities including shops and restaurants.
