The ceremony lasts only an hour and half and is a combination of simplicity and glory.
They open with English and conduct the actual ceremony in Latin.
The vice chancellor and deans know enough Latin to carry out the ceremony.
The auditorium remains in dead silence until it’s time to clap, classical music plays at certain points.
The graduands gown in their colleges and then match to the Sheldonian theater for the ceremony.
Attendance is strictly by invitation and each visitor must have a ticket issued by the university through the graduands.
If you don’t have one, you’ll be bounced.
In this batch, 3 Nigerians bagged degrees and my tam tam Sis whose guest I was, was one of them.
In the opening speech, the vice chancellor makes it clear that getting into the university is difficult, their training is protracted and anyone who holds their degree can deliver anywhere in the world.
It’s not a boast, it’s fact.
Also, when you graduate from here, you join an online community that has deserving access to opportunities that would usually elude many others.
Question is do they deliver?
The answer is BEYOND EXPECTATION.
If you doubt, google popular Oxford University alumni and see the caliber of humans that would pop up, count the number of presidents, prime ministers and scientists.
There’s a reason this university is top in the world.
It’s an amazing idea that has lived over 800years and still raising giants.
Out of about 30,000 students, America and China has the highest number of international students in the school with each about 1,500 in the school.
Nigeria has about 83 students in the school.
My tam tam Sis bagged a masters degree in international human rights law.
We were all raised in Okigwe and lived in neighbouring streets those days.
She has been doing exploits in her field and would move to another level henceforth.
