About NUC (National University Commission) – History

The NUC (National University Commission) is a Nigerian government commission body established in 1962 as the Cabinet Office advisory agency and tasked with promoting quality tertiary education.

NUC became a statutory body in 1974 and Prof. Jibril Aminu was appointed as its first Executive Secretary.

The Main Functions of NUC

  • Granting academic programs offered in Nigerian Universities approval
  • Ensuring all academic programs offered in Nigerian universities are of quality

1. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, popularly known as ABTU, is a federal university of technology located in Bauchi, Bauchi State.

ABTU was founded in 1980 and was named after Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.

The university is currently housing 1,000 administrative staff, 10,000 undergraduates, and 200 postgraduates.

3. Federal University, Birnin Kebbi

Federal University Birnin Kebbi is an educational institution founded on the 18th of February 2013 and located in Birnin Kebbi, the capital of Kebbi state, a town in the northwestern part of Nigeria.

The idea to establish FUBK was proposed during the regime of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan taking into account the Government policy to establish a Federal institution in states that have none.

FUBK officially started operating in November 2014 with a total of 507 students and 102 academic staff.

4. Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State

The Federal University Oye-Ekiti is a government-owned and multi-campus public university located in Aare Afao Road, Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, southwest Nigeria.

The institution was established in 2011 by the federal government presided by the then President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

FUOYE is home to about 26,000 students, 23,500 undergraduates, and 1,500 postgraduates.

Established on July 29, 1992, Adekunle Ajasin University is located in Akungba-Akoko. It is a private university owned by the state government.

AAUA was formerly known as Obafemi Awolowo University and Ondo State University but adopted its current permanent name in honor of Late Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin.

The university has approximately 20,000 students and offers pre-degree, undergraduates, and postgraduates programs in seven faculties with departments sub-divided under them.

7. Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State

The Federal University Dutse (FUD) is a public tertiary institution located in Jigawa State, Nigeria, and was established in 2011 by the federal government of Nigeria.

A total of 205 students were enrolled in three faculties at the time FUD commence service. Now, the number of students has grown to 3,200 students and 1,332 academic and non-academic staff.

8. Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH)

CRUTECH is an acronym for the Cross River University of Technology. It is a multi-campus state-owned higher institution located in Calabar, South, Cross River State, and was established in August 2002.

CRUTECH has four campuses situated in Calabar, Okuku, Obubra, and Ogoja. Across the four local government areas of Cross River state.

The Cross River University of Technology came into existence when three former higher institutions form a merger, and since then, the school has been growing in size, technology, and the basic training to impact Nigeria positively.

9. Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State

Federal University, Wukari is a university located in Wukari, Taraba State. It was established in 2011 under former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and is also accredited by NUC (National Universities Commission).
