Universities in Osun state, Nigeria – Osun state is a southwestern state in Nigeria, the giant of Africa that is blessed with a reasonable amount of institutions not excluding universities. Osun State, a state named after a river, is a state dominated by the Yorubas even dating back to its inception.
Ile Ife is a major city in Osun and it is of no news that Ile Ife is the origin of the Yorubas.
Osun state has so many cities with fascinating views and history such as its capital; Oshogbo. Oshogbo is one major place for excursion and tourism by Nigerians and even foreigners from all over the world.
Osun state ranks as the ninth smallest in area size. It also ranks as one of the most populous states in Nigeria.
Currently, there are ten universities in Osun State. Of the ten universities, only one belongs to the federal government and so is it to the state. However, eight of the universities belong to private owners. Each institution has its private owner.

1.Adeleke University, Iwo
The first private institution on the list. Adeleke University is one of the private universities created in Nigeria. The institution was created in the year 2011 in Ede, one of Osun’s towns. Of course, the name ‘Adeleke’ rings a bell in the ears of most Nigerians.
The musician, Davido is a very popular musician and an award-winning one that is known by most people in Nigeria. David Adeleke aka Davido is the son of billionaire businessman and mogul, Chief Adedeji Adeleke.
Wondering how this got to do with this? Well, guess who the founder of Adeleke University is? Well, you guessed right Chief Adedeji Adeleke is the founder of Adeleke University.
The university was created in support of the Seventh Day Adventist church but is, however, not controlled by it.
The motto of the institution is ‘Education, Excellence, and Character’.
Adeleke university has eight faculties namely the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Basic medical sciences, faculty of business and social sciences, faculty of engineering, faculty of science as well as faculty of law.
2.Bowen University, Iwo
Bowen University is a private institution that is owned as well as managed by the Nigerian Baptist Convention. The institution is located in Iwo, Osun state.
Bowen university was founded on the 17th of July, 2001. Subsequently, on the 2nd of august, 2001, the institution was accredited but the school commenced academic activities on the 4th of November, 2002. Another great achievement of this great university is that in 2018, the university launched a radio station.
The motto of the institution is ‘Excellence and Godliness’.
3.Fountain University, Oshogbo
Fountain University is another private religious institution but this time, it is an Islamic institution based in Osogbo, the capital of Osun state. NAFSAT; Nasrul Lahi Li Fattih society, an Islamic community in 2007.
The institution currently has two colleges namely the college of natural and applied sciences as well as the college of management and social sciences.
Shortly, other colleges like the College of Engineering as well as the college of art and also the college of education will be set up.
4.Joseph Ayo Babalola university
Joseph Ayo Babalola University PKA JABU is a private institution that is set up in Arakeji, Osun State. The institution was named by the Christ Apostolic Church, CAC, and the institution was named after Joseph Ayo Babalola who was born in 1904 and ceased to live in the year 1959.
To honor him, the Christ Apostolic church named the institution after him as he was their first spiritual leader, of course, before his death. Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU) was established in 2004 and has held the position of being the first entrepreneurial university in Nigeria.

5.Kings University, Odemu
Founded in 2005, Kings University is a private Christian university that is located in Odemu, Osun state. The Kingsway International Christian Center laid down the institution with the founder of the church, Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo being the chancellor of the institution.
In the year 2021, December precisely, King’s University was rated as the 31st university in Nigeria! Bypassing a lot of universities. Also, it was recorded to have ranked the 26th out of the 99 private institutions we have in Nigeria.
Kings University has three faculties viz Faculty of Science, Faculty of Management and Social science as well as Faculty of Humanities
6.Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife
Obafemi Awolowo University, popularly referred to as OAU, Ile Ife is a prestigious university located in Ile Ife, the birth home of the Yoruba tradition and practice. OAU was established in 1961 and began academic activities in 1962.
At that time, the institution allowed only 244 students
At first, it was referred to as ‘University of Ife’ and with time, on the 12th of May 1987, it was renamed after Obafemi Awolowo who also died in the year 1987.
The motto of the institution is ‘For Learning and culture’.
7.Oduduwa University
Oduduwa University, although not sounding like it, (name-wise) is a private institution in Ipetumodu that was founded in 2009. Also, the institution has been officially recognized as a tertiary institution and has been accredited.
There are four academic colleges present in the school viz: College of Management and Social Sciences (CMSS) which further has eight departments under it, College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CNAS) which has six departments under it, College of Environmental Design and Management (CEDM) with three departments under it and finally, College of engineering and technology (CET) with three departments under it.

8.Osun State University
This is the only state-owned institution in Osun State. The university has a variety of colleges including but not limited to College of Health, College of Agriculture, e.t.c as well as varieties of faculties including but not limited to faculty of basic clinical sciences, basic health sciences amongst others, and finally, a lot of departments including but not limited to the department of agronomy, department of sciences as well as the department of anatomy amongst others.
9.Redeemer’s University
Redeemer’s University, located in Ede was founded in the year 2005 by the Redeemed Christian church of God. In 2005, an operating license was given to them.
The university has produced a lot of graduates including the renowned comedian, Mr. Macaroni.

10.Westland University
Westland University is a new, recently founded institution in Osun. The university has three faculties viz faculties of social and management sciences, faculty of basic science and computing as well as faculty of mass and media comm/ Library and info science.
