On March 17, 1885, the cornerstone for the university was laid by Oliver Heald at President Perry’s request. The following year, Florida governor Harrison J. Wortham signed a bill that officially established the University of Florida as a state university on January 5, 1886.

About the University of Florida

The University is located in Gainesville, on seventy-five acres (300,000 m2) of land purchased from Daniel O’Connell Jr., next to Lake Alice on the north side of campus and northeast of downtown Gainesville. In October 2007 it was ranked first in the nation among all public universities according to U.S News & World Report college rankings and second according to Forbes Magazine when its U.S.

The university has about 16 academic colleges and 150 research centers.

Facilities at the University

The University of Florida is home to fifteen libraries and more than 58,000 volumes of books. Special collections include the George A. Smathers Libraries, Florida Collections, the Harn Museum of Art Library, the John P. Grace Memorial Library on the Broward Academic Campus, the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors Library at UF’s J. Hillis Miller Health Science Center, and special collections at the Smathers Libraries representing all academic disciplines.

The University also has two extensive university library facilities at its branch campus in Broward County located in Davie, Florida (the South Campus Library) and Fort Lauderdale (the North Campus Library).

Florida’s main library is the Frederick M. Rowland Library, located on the original Gainesville campus. The University of Florida also has two branch campuses in South Florida: in the cities of Davie and Fort Lauderdale (North Campus Library).

Cultural Activities in the University

The University of Florida hosts a variety of cultural activities, many of which are free and open to both students and members of the community. The campus is home to four museums:

The Harn Museum presents rotating exhibitions of professional artwork by national and international artists, as well as touring exhibitions developed by curatorial staff, faculty members, and visiting scholars. Highlights include works by Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Georges Seurat and Pablo Picasso. It also has a collection of 40,000 archaeological objects from sites in Florida and throughout the South.

The Museum of Natural History and the Gallery of Art has exhibits that showcase the beauty of Florida’s land and water ecosystems as well as its diverse cultural heritage.

Scholarships at the University of Florida

College tuition can be expensive – with the average bachelor’s degree costing $32,405 per year! Luckily there are a lot of scholarships available to help make that cost a little more manageable. To help get you started on your scholarship search, here are some different types of University of Florida Scholarships you might consider applying for in 2022/23:

  • The UF Trustees Scholarship

This scholarship offers students up to $10,000 per academic year and is available for both incoming freshmen and transfer students.

  • Louise M. Slaughter Scholarship

This scholarship provides full undergraduate and graduates tuition for two years as well as room and board at the University of Florida or any other public institution in Florida.

  • UF Culinary Institute Scholarship

This scholarship offers full tuition for students wanting to attend the UF Culinary Institute.

  • Joan & Howard Galand Scholarship

This $10,000 scholarship is given to one student a year at the University of Florida, with preference given to students from Martin County.

  • Golden Apple Scholars of Florida

The Golden Apple Scholars Program offers scholarships ranging from $100-$5,000. One winner is chosen from each of the six public universities in Florida based on academic performance and community involvement.

  • UF Scholarships for Single Mothers

The UF single mothers’ scholarship provides full tuition and fees for returning undergraduate students who have dependent children.

  • UF Scholarships for the Disabled

Several scholarships are available to students with disabilities, including a full tuition award, an honorarium, living expenses, and health insurance.

  • Individuals with Disabilities Act (ADA) Tuition Waiver

The Tuition Waiver is available to students who have been accepted into school but have been unable to afford tuition. These students can have as much time as they need to complete their studies.

  • UF Scholarship Program

The UF Scholarship program offers several scholarships – Full tuition, room, and board plus a living stipend for four years of undergraduate study.

  • UF National Merit Scholarships

The National Merit Scholarship offers up to $2,500/year as an award for students with exceptional scholastic achievement.

  • National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP)

NHRP is a scholarship program that recognizes and rewards outstanding Hispanic American high school students.

  • Academic Scholarships

UF offers a variety of academic scholarships, including the Bienes Expanded Access Initiative for Wheelchair Students (BEAWS) Scholarship, the Regents’ Undergraduate Fellowship, and the Regents’ Presidential Scholarship. The University also offers more than 30 departmental scholarships.

Application Procedure at the University of Florida

Here are the processes to follow when applying for a scholarship;

  • Apply for a UF scholarship ONLINE by completing the online application and profile survey. Note: you will need to set up an FSA ID account if you don’t already have one with the Department of Education.
  • Submit an OFFICIAL transcript, CLASS schedule (or unofficial transcript), and ACT / SAT scores OR TOEFL / IELTS score report
  • Submit a secondary application form to Admissions (part of the online application process).
  • Request that any official test scores be sent directly from the testing agency to UF’s Office of Admissions at the address above (score verification required in addition to original scores; no special handling or additional fees are required).
  • LSAC CAS report must be sent directly to UF Law School either with an upload or a mailed hard copy, as designated on the LSAC website. LSAC CAS report must be sent.

Documents Needed to Study at the University of Florida

The list of documents needed to apply for a scholarship is;

Proof of Nationality and legal residence in the United States (birth certificate or passport)  

  • – Non-U.S. citizen (green card)
  • High School Transcripts – No copies
  • Interview Letter
  • Recommendations from an Instructor
  • Proof of English Language Proficiency (IELTS or TOEFL scores from a testing center in the United States or results from the SKYPE examination
  • Proof of Religion (any official document with a stamp or seal bearing the name of religion you follow)
  • Proof of Financial Need (See below for details) – Section 4010 Certification Statement by your University Scholarship Committee.
  • Personal statement explaining your research interest and how you will contribute to the community.
  • If a student needs financial assistance, a ‘4010’ Certification Statement (Financial Aid Documentation) from your University Scholarship Committee will also be required.

Financial Aid

A student may qualify for financial assistance through the policy of affirmative action and equal opportunity. The applicant must demonstrate financial need as well as qualify in the other categories listed above and will be considered on those merits alone.

Financial need is defined as that level of income that puts a student below the federal poverty guidelines. The potential scholarship award is determined by the Office of Student Financial Assistance based on their research, their evaluation of federal programs and state aid programs, and their experience with similar awards at other universities (if possible). Students are not guaranteed a scholarship.
