A new and innovative way to help you make your dreams a reality is right here at the University of Kansas. One of the most prestigious honorary academic organizations for student achievement, Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, is here to make sure that our students are gaining their full potential. With over 1 million members worldwide, this organization helps to recognize academic excellence. Phi Theta Kappa strives for all students not only succeed on campus but also in life by developing leadership skills and abilities for service through education and scholarship programs.

The University of Kansas’ Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society was officially recognized as an American national organization on October 12, 2002. In 1991, the University of Kansas recognized the long list of achievements of the Kappa Kappa Psi Chapter and gained permission for the chapter to be officially recognized as a national honorary society on May 2, 1992.

In 1957, the University of Kansas held a dual recognition ceremony for its outstanding college and alumni organizations by both being honored with top honors by Phi Beta Kappa and also granting official recognition to two separate chapters simultaneously: Alpha Chi Rho (Kappa Alpha Psi) and Phi Theta Kappa (Pi Tau Alpha). Graduated KU student Angela Stark entered into both organizations in January 1957 to further her academic endeavors.

Scholarship Description

Scholarships are awarded to students from our University that have been accepted into Phi Theta Kappa. If you have heard of the organization, it is because there is a big national convention every year in November. It’s an organization that has a national presence and a strong collegiate network that raises funds for scholarships at its local chapters.

The Department of Scholarships and Financial Aid awards scholarships to qualified freshman KU students who are both eligible as student members of Phi Theta Kappa and who meet the criteria for either special or general academic merit scholarships. There are four categories of financial aid: gift aid, self-help aid, work-study programs, and loans. General academic merit scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence and leadership qualities.

Each year Phi Theta Kappa honors outstanding students by awarding more than $400,000 in scholarships through national chapters. The Kansas-Pi Chapter administers its scholarship program, which is provided for here at KU.

Freshman Scholarships – These awards are available to incoming freshmen who are members of Phi Theta Kappa.

The application deadline is March 15 and the awards will be announced in April. Recipients are selected based on high school grade point average, ACT or SAT scores, and rank in class.
